Thoughts About Chrome
For the most part, using CSS is just a given these days when building websites. Even when the project is primarily flash, I still use css. Through the years browsers have come a long way with being able to render CSS correctly with the exception of IE 5 and IE 6 (grrr!). I was reading an article on www.webdesignerdepot.com asking if Google Chrome is the new IE 6. Harsh? yeah, a bit. nothing is that bad. Since I’ve been using Chrome , I’ve noticed some things don’t render or behave as expected but I don’t look at Chrome as “dev browser” just yet so I’m a bit more tolerant. According to W3schools, in as of January ’09, Chrome has 3.9% market share. And even though Safari is slightly lower at 3.0%, it’s the targted browser on Macs. Now where I throw my hands in the air, along with millions of other designers, is the fact that we have to still support the old IE series of browsers that require CSS hacks just to get simple things like padding to render correctly. I can’t wait for the day I don’t have to support “broken” browsers and can throw CSS caution to the wind. But until then then I’ll continue testing sites, I use Firefox, Safari, and sigh… IE 6.
